CONTEXT:

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of Delaware is nationally recognized for its exceptional educational experiences and for integrating instruction, research, and public engagement. With 24 academic departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, more than 25 centers, programs, and institutes, and featuring outstanding research and teaching facilities, CAS serves over 7,500 students, is supported by approximately 400 staff, and maintains annual operating expenditures of over $121M. The College’s 600 faculty members emphasize the enduring value of an arts and sciences education and a deep commitment to excellence in scholarship and all forms of creative and intellectual expression, with sponsored research expenditures totaling more than $38.6M per fiscal year.

The college is divided up into “sectors” of Departments, Programs and Centers. Each sector comprises several departments, programs, and centers. Each CSS is responsible for one sector and will act as backup for other sectors as needed.

Under the limited direction of the Manager of Computing Operations for Field Support and in coordination with the Department Chairperson(s), the Computer Support Specialist I, within their sector, is responsible for maintaining managed desktop and laptop computers, lab computers, as well as their portions of all IT systems utilized therein.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to the Manager of Computing Operations for Field Support
  • Performs technical duties in the setup, operation, and maintenance of personal computers as well as user support and education for a group (sector) College academic departments and programs.
  • Utilize remote management tools to manage faculty and staff computers.
  • Administers and maintains the portion of the Arts and Sciences datacenter dedicated to his or her sector. Seeks to improve unit workflow through the implementation these services.
  • Ensures data security and backup through use of these services.
  • Maintain instructional computing site(s).
  • Recommend equipment and service upgrades to sites.
  • Evaluate and test new software packages.
  • Ensures that sector computing and information systems conform to CAS and UD policies and procedures with respect to security and responsible use.
  • Coordinate with CAS IT to ensure that core hardware and software plans fit department needs. Form partnerships with units when initiating teaching with technology projects.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in computer science or computer engineering preferred.
  • Familiarity of PC & Mac desktop hardware and software, most common software packages (e.g. MS Office) required, as well as the ability to learn and support sector specific software as needed (e.g. STATA). Familiar with Active Directory and O365 a must.
  • This position involves the frequent replacement and/or relocation of personal computer equipment. The position requires the ability to lift and move, without assistance, computing equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Experience in a higher education academic department environment is highly desirable.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work.
  • Strong ability to interact with both technical and non-technical end users. Can interpret requests from non-technical users, guide them in what is technically feasible, and create outcome which both fulfills the need but is also feasible given financial and man-hour limitations.
