POSITION DESCRIPTION The Wisconsin State Fair Park (WSFP) is seeking a skilled, customer service-oriented candidate to fill a full-time, year-round Equipment Operator in our Facility Services Department. The position’s core duties include the preparation, maintenance, and cleanup of the grounds at State Fair Park specifically relating to more physically demanding jobs. In addition, this incumbent will be a skilled equipment operator that has experience with light equipment and/or machinery.
EMPLOYMENT TYPE This position is an unclassified, Dual-Limited Term Employment (LTE) position within the State of Wisconsin employment system. Annual hours worked will not exceed 2,078, although this position will allow for a flexible schedule outside of the summer months. More than 40 hours per week may be required leading up to and during the annual Wisconsin State Fair.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS The starting wage for this role will be $16.00 to $18.00 per hour, based on qualifications. A comprehensive fringe benefits package, including a pension, health and dental insurance, life insurance, and disability insurance is available after a minimum employment period is met.
Paid time off for vacation, holidays, etc. is not included as part of the benefits package per State of Wisconsin Legislature, s. 230.26(4), Wis. Stats.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Use small hand and power tools for various tasks and during events.
- Operate vehicles equipped with snow removal equipment to ensure that parking lots and other areas are clear of snow and ice.
- Operate lift vehicles (scissors, fork and others) to assist with the movement of equipment or hanging of materials for events on the grounds.
- Operate skid steers and other tractor type equipment to assist with removal of animal bedding and tasks associated with agricultural events.
- Outdoor cleaning including but not limited to:
- Paper-picking
- Pulling of full garbage bags and replacing with new garbage bags
- Sweeping
- Pushing garbage carts
- Assist equipment operators with the disposal of garbage bags into towed dumpsters.
- Assist with barn changeovers during the fair to include but not limited to:
- Shoveling and sweeping stalls to standards determined by a supervisor or crew leader
- Sweeping inside and outside of barns
- Removal of puddles after rains at the fair via brooms or squeegee.
- Lift, and assemble/disassemble horse, sheep, swine and cattle stalls.
- Move heavy furniture such as desks, file cabinets and couches into and out of temporary fair trailers and offices.
- Lift manual fence-post drivers for installing snow fence posts particularly to accommodate fair parking.
- Lift and assemble/disassemble 8-foot-high temporary fence.
- Install scrim on fencing for the creation of “backstage” areas.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS - Experience with light equipment and machinery, including, but not limited to: forklifts, scissor lift, skid steers, tractors, snow removal trucks, etc.
- Basic proficiency with various hand tools such as hammers, socket wrenches and screw drivers
- General cleaning experience, preferred
- Must possess a valid Driver License
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Ability to stay standing and/or walking for extended periods of time with or without accommodation
- Ability to perform repetitive lifting of heavy equipment of 70+ pounds with or without accommodation
SPECIAL NOTES In relation to the non-fair work schedule, this position may need to cover any event schedule, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. The candidate must also be able to work all 11 days of the annual Wisconsin State Fair. Prior to appointment to this position, the candidate will be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check.
This position may also be exposed to (sometimes harsh) cleaning products along with working in a barn-like environment for extended periods of time.
