Online Writing Lab Website Coordinator

The OWL Website Coordinator works with both the Director of the Writing Center and the ITS Team to ensure the smooth running of the Excelsior OWL (Online Writing Lab.) This person consistently works within WordPress to ensure regular website functionality, such as correcting broken links, adding new web content, and designing interactive activities in H5P. The Online Learning Coordinator adds new content to the OWL keeping in mind best practices of content design, web design, user practice, and accessibility. This person must be able to work with a variety of people inside and outside of the University environment.
The OWL Website Coordinator also regularly uses Google Analytics and Facebook Insights to provide website usage data and other pertinent information to the Director of the Writing Center. This data helps the Director to make data-driven decisions about the OWL. This is a part-time hybrid function operating about 20 hours per week, with a minimum of one required day at Excelsior's home office of 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, NY, with the remainder of the days worked in the house.

tasks and Responsibilities: 

»Develop accessible content for the OWL. This includes creating and maintaining:

»Interactive PDFs

»Videos complete with transcript and closed captioning Pages within the OWL

»Activities within H5P

»Posts for Hoot - The Excelsior OWL Blog Posts for Facebook

»Edit The Excelsior OWL website content developed by SMEs and work with the Director of the Writing Center to make sure the content is correct and displayed according to the parameters of the platform.

»Craft new content when content on a page is out-of-date and review new content or any other edits with the Director of the Writing Center for approval.

»Monitor The Excelsior OWL website and when a link is found to be broken, find the same or similar content in a new location, suggest edits to the Director of the Writing Center, and upon approval implement all edits and changes.

»Gather google data analytics for the OWL, the OWL blog Hoot, and the OWL Facebook page on a monthly basis and prepare a graphical dashboard of the data for the Director of the Writing Center.

»Coordinate technology issues and strategies for large content lifts with ITS.

»Develop a solid knowledge of Excelsior's mission statement and design/edit content with JEDI in mind.

»Work cooperatively with the Director of Web Systems when troubleshooting glitches or issues on the Wordpress site.

Qualifications required 

»Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, or related field preferred, Associates degree required.

»Certificate in web design preferred.

»Excellent English and communication expertise and the capability to wordsmith content from SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) as well as craft new content.

»Background in WordPress, H5P, and Canvas.

»Working knowledge of Google Analytics.

»Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Camtasia (or other video editing software).

»Solid knowledge of HTML and basic knowledge of CSS

»Familiarity with academic citation methodologies (APA, MLA, Chicago)

»Proficiency creating web content following Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

»Strong attention to detail and solid proofreading expertise.

» practice working independently and as a team member capability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

»Demonstrated capability to lgain new technology.

»Basic expertise in graphic design preferred.
