The salary range for this position is $61.00 - $79.67 (Hourly Rate)

Placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors such as relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in our outpatient Neurology department with a focus on Movement Disorders.  The APP will manage and see follow-up patients. This patient panel requires frequent follow-up visits, and as our Movement Disorders Neurology patient volumes continue to grow, timely access to care will be increasingly important. This role will provide the necessary follow-up access to support this patient population and ensure continuity of care.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
  • Responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population.
  • Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in specific area of clinical expertise.
  • Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentor graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct clinical care to patients.
  • Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations in clinical area of expertise.
  • Clinical management of advanced and atypical parkinsonism
  • Provide care for patients in advanced stages of movement disorders — including homebound individuals, those with dementia requiring extensive/frequent visits, and those with multiple comorbidities.
  • Triage and see patients in person or virtually for any worrisome messages, questions, or concerns
  • Manage continuous levodopa infusions (e.g. subcutaneous, gastro-jejunal systems), which often require more frequent clinical visits
  • Assist with local clinical trial study visits
  • Assist in regional program building and development for the Movement Disorders division
  • Help coordinate multidisciplinary round
  • Prescribe/order medications, therapies; order/interpret laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
  • Document in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed for which the Licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible.
  • Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Serve as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
  • Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making.
  • Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation.
  • Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and role model for "Patients First".
  • Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
  • Employ comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families.
  • Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
  • Provide formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to area of specialty
  • Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient population as appropriate. 

Qualifications

Required :

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program  
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body as approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. OR Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program/Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois. 
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO)
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (issued by the American Heart Association) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required as specified by department
  • Controlled substance license and DEA registration required as specified by the department

Preferred:

  • 2 years of experience in Neurology
