Job Description

Town Of Freeport Maine Police Department

Police Officer Job Announcement

The Town of Freeport is accepting applications for opening(s) for the position of police officer

Law enforcement is one of the few remaining career paths that offers a high level of long-term security and comprehensive benefits.

  • Retirement: We offer a 25-year retirement plan. This allows officers to retire with a guaranteed monthly lifetime income much earlier than in the private sector. Say you’re 23 years old, you put in a career of 25 years, that puts you at 48 years old. You retire and receive your pension check each month for the rest of your life.
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage: We offer a robust medical, dental, and vision insurance for officers and their families.
  • Paid Training: we pay you a full salary while you attend the police academy, complete field training, and all training for your career.
  • Overtime & Detail Pay: You will have the ability to significantly increase your base salary through overtime shifts or "special details".
  • $30.12/hour no experience
  • Top pay $39.84/hour

The job is rarely stagnant. Once an officer completes their initial patrol phase, the "career within a career" begins.

  • Diverse Specializations: You aren't locked into one role. You can transition into specialized units such as Criminal Investigations (Detectives) , K-9 Handling , or School Resource Officers .
  • Leadership Opportunities: There is a clear promotional ladder (Sergeant, Lieutenant). These roles allow you to move into administrative and supervisory positions where you can influence departmental policy and culture.

Beyond the paycheck, the psychological rewards of the job are what sustain most officers over a long career.

  • The "Front Row Seat" to History: Law enforcement offers a unique perspective on the community. You are often present for a town’s most significant moments, and no two days are ever the same.
  • Immediate Problem Solving: While some jobs involve months of planning, police work often provides the satisfaction of immediate results—whether that’s finding a missing child, de-escalating a volatile situation, or rendering life-saving medical aid before paramedics arrive.
  • The Brotherhood/Sisterhood: The "Blue Thread" is real. Because of the shared stress and unique nature of the work, officers often develop a level of trust and camaraderie with their colleagues that is rarely found in an office environment.
  • Building Community Trust: There is a deep sense of pride in being the person the community turns to in a crisis. Freeport Police Department emphasizes "Community Policing," where the reward is building long-term, positive relationships with the citizens you protect.

Law enforcement requires you to stay sharp. You will receive ongoing training in:

  • Legal Updates: Staying current on constitutional law and civil rights.
  • Tactical & Medical Skills: From advanced first aid, modern de-escalation techniques, and tactical training.
  • Technology: Learning to use sophisticated tools like Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) and forensic software.

The Bottom Line: Working for the Freeport Polie Department as a police officer is a "service-first" calling. While the physical and mental demands are high, the combination of financial security and the ability to make a tangible difference in someone's worst moment creates a rewarding career that few other professions can match.

We want hard working folks that are looking for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Application can be downloaded from the Town of Freeport web site. Application materials can be emailed to Courtney Sparks, Human Resources Director at csparks@freeportmaine.com, or mailed to:
