Context of Job:
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, the Accommodation Coordinator serves as the primary point of accountability for coordinating the University's implementation of the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, as amended 2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 {Section 504), and is thus responsible for facilitating access to the academic programs, services, activities, and facilities of the institution for students with disabilities. The position supports students, families, faculty and staff in understanding rights and responsibilities under the ADA/Section 504. Additionally, this position determines and facilitates the implementation of reasonable accommodations and is responsible for the resolution of problems or conflicts related to accommodations and services.
Major Responsibilities:
· Engages in an interactive process with students to evaluate requests for disability-related academic, physical, and technological accommodations at the University.· Interprets medical, psychological, neuropsychological, and educational documentation to determine eligibility for requested disability-related accommodations.· Provides extensive direct support to students with disabilities including but not limited to resolving conflicts related to accommodations; referring to appropriate campus and community resources; and, responding to requests for advocacy to/from Assistant Deans, Academic Committees, Dean of Students Office, Registrar, Residence Life and Housing and other University departments.· Provides university-wide consultation, education, and training on processes of the DSS office, universal design, and the intersections of disability with the social and physical environments.· Participates in outreach to new and prospective students and families regarding the processes and procedures of the Office of Disability Support Services.· Researches, evaluates, and stays abreast of best practices and trends in postsecondary accessibility solutions. Participates on divisional and University-wide committees; liaison with campus departments for special populations or programs that include students with disabilities, as requested by the Director.· Assists Assistant Director in developing strategies, partnerships, and initiatives to further the mission of the Office of Disability Support Services to maximize campus access for all personswith disabilities.· Documents and maintains appropriate electronic records of verbal and written communications with students, staff, faculty, and others as it pertains to students with disabilities.· Collects and analyses data on Disability Support Services events, services, and trends.· Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including broad collaboration with campus partners.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree, master’s degree preferred, in rehabilitation counseling, counselor education, community counseling, human services, social work, or other related discipline with four years' experience working with people with disabilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.· Familiarity with strategies and experience working with people with disabilities and facilitating accommodations in complex, multi-level environments.· Clear knowledge and understanding of the application of Section 504 and the ADA in the higher education context, and ability to recognize legal risk associated with disability and accommodation issues.· Highly developed written and oral communication skills.· Ability to communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.· Knowledge of academic, physical, and technological accommodations for people with disabilities accommodations in an academic environment.· Ability to interpret medical, psychological, neuropsychological, and educational documentation.· Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and re-prioritize; ability to successfully adapt to rapid change; ability to work collaboratively and to foster effective relationships.· Computer skills in either Macintosh or Windows platforms.· Ability to use advanced techniques in spreadsheet, database, and/or presentation software.Special Requirements:· Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.· Some travel across campus and to multiple UD locations is necessary.· Must handle confidential disability-related information in compliance with FERPA and ADA guidelines.
